First Native American came to live at the strait. Their house was made by wood and they hunted, cought fishes, and farmed for their hunger. Next French came. They were looking for way to go to China but they couldn't find it. Although he couldn't find the way to China, he found many animals with fur and this led to fur trade. When American Indians and French were working together for a long time, British soldier and fur trader came. They were incharge of Michilimakinac after they won the battle with French. The American Indians didn't like British because British didn't keep up the tradition and Chief Minavavana and Matchekewis led to war and captured fort Michilimakinac in 1763. After one year later British came back and worked harder to get along with Indians. The Revolutionary War changed everything in Michilimakinac. British was afraid to be attacked by Americans or Indians. So they moved their fort to Mackinac Island's cliff. Many buildings moved to Mackinac Island.

French traders gave American Indians item such as cloth, blankets, knives, and beads. The traders brought the furs to the Straits and the British soldiers and fur traders came. However, the American Indians didn't like the British for trading. So, the American Indians decided to fight against the British. The was was led by chiet Minavavana and Matchekewis, the Ojibwa, Sac and Fox nations of American Indians captured For Michilimackinac in 1763. The British military had officers and soldiers living at the fort. Michilimackinac didn't have schools, but some children were educated by the priest. Fur traders built houses outside the walls of the fort. This area was called the suburbs. By 1781, Fort MAckinac was finished. Later, the British had to give it to the Americans because the United States had won the Revolutionary War. Americans were in charge of the fort and the fur trade stated again. When the Civil War started, Fort Mackina's soldiers went to fight for the Union Army. There were no battles at Fort Mackinac, but it was still a part of the war. The people that tan the Mackinac Island State Park realized that the history of the island needed to be protected like the nature.

The American Indians were the first people who came to Machonac Island. They gathered and made house from tree bark. Next French came in 1634. Jean Nicolet saw many animals and started the fur trade. American Indians caught the furs and French traders provided items such as knives, cloth, and blankets. The French built Michilimachinac in 1715. The British soldiers and fur traders came when they won a war with France. The American Indians decided to have a war with the British because British did not keep tradition. They captured Fort Michilimachinac in 1763. During the Revolutionary War fur trade in Machinac Island became harder. Robert Campbell built a saw mill and it was called Mill Creek. After the Revolutionary war Americans were in charge of the fort. The fur trade was very busy after fighting. So many animals were hunted fo fishing replaced the fur trade. Machinac's soldiers fought for the Union Army during the Civil War but there were no battles in Machinac Island. After the Civil War, many tourist came to Machinac Island. Island became the United State's second National Park because it was clean and beautiful. The people decided to preserve old buildings and sites.

The American Indians were the first people who came to the Straits of Mackinac area. They gained their food from hunting, fishing, farming and gathering and made their houses from tree bark. Next came the French. In 1634, a man named Jean Nicolet saw many animals with fur. He told ather people and they came to get the furs. This was the beginning of the fur trade. The French traders gave to them items for cloth, blackest, knives, beads, kettles and other items for the furs. The French built Michilimackinac in 1715. The British soldiers and fur traders came. They were in charge of Michilimackinac after they won the war with France. The British took the island from France. The American Indians were not happy about trading with the British, because the British didn’t support then French. They force American Indians, the British didn’t keep up the tradition of gift giving like the French had and they were not as generous as the French, so the American Indians decided to have a war with the British. They captured Fort Michilimackinac in 1763. The British military had officers and soldiers living at the fort. Michilimackinac did not have a school but some children were taught by the priest that was also living there. They built houses outside the walls of the fort. This area was called the suburbs. The Revolutionary War changed everything at Michilimackinac. And the British were afraid of being attacked by American or Indian forces, so they decided to move the fort to the high cliffs of nearby Mackinac Island. When the military moved to the island, so did all the people living at Michilimackinac. The traders and their families made a village on the island, below the fort. And they built some new buildings of the island were made of limestone. Most of the new houses and buildings were made from wood. Robert Cambell had the good idea to build a saw mill at the creek near Michilimackinac. Cambell built the place which is instead of people operating the saw, the water in the creek made the power to cut the wood. They called the placed where the mill was built Mill Creek. Soon 1781, the United States had won the Revolutionary War, so the British had to give it to the Americans. Magdaline LaFramboise was on of the traders on the island. She taught some children who lived there. More people moved to the island and more buildings were built. So many aninals had been hunted that there weren’t many left, so the mills at Mill Creek were not used as much and they were closed. Soon fishing replaced the fur trade as the main business on Mackinac Island. When the Civil War started, Fort Mackinac’s soldiers went to fight for the Union Army. Three important Confederate officials were guarded and kept as prisoners at the fort. After the war ended many people started coming to visit Mackinac Island, because the island was clean and beautiful. The United States Government decided to make the fort and parts of the island into a park in 1875. Twenty years later, in 1895, the government gave the National Park to the State of Michigan. It became Mackinac Island State Park, Michigan’s first state park. And now many people started to save and preserve older buildings and sites.

The Straits of Mackinac has very important role in the history. Native Americans were the first people who live at the Straits. They were hunting, fishing and farming to get foods. Later, some French people were looking for the way to go to China but, they could not find it. They saw a lot of animals with fur and they asked people to trade the furs with Native Americans. French gave them cloth, blankets, knives, beads, and kettle. French traders and Native Americans had good relationship for a long time. Most traders exchanged their goods in the Straits of Mackinac. British soldiers wanted to
Do fur trade and there was a war between French and British. British won this battle so they started to trade with Native Americans. Native Americans did not like it because British did not keep up the tradition of gift giving. Native Americans decided to have a war with the British. Finally, Native Americans can trade with French people again, British worked harder to get along with the Native Americans. Michilimackinac was changed a lot by the Revolutionary War. During the war, it was difficult to trade, people determined to move the fort to the high cliffs of nearby Mackinac Island. People used wood and built new buildings. Untied States had won the Revolutionary War. Americans were chargers of the fort and the fur trade started again. However, there was another war which called War of 1812. British took the Fort back and fur trade became very busy. After several years, there were no more furs in the Straits of Mackinac area. Fishing became the main business on Mackinac Island and they sold fish to Chicago and Detroit. In 1861, there was a Civil war between Confederates and Union. After the Civil War, many people came to Mackinac Island as tourists. They wanted to see the beautiful view of the Mackinac Island and the Government decided to make Mackinac Island into the National park. Today, people were still preserving the Mackinac Island. Mackinac Island shows the history of Michigan and life of Native Americans and fur traders.
